  • Adrian’s vocals have a rough, yearning edge, like someone straining to sing to the moon. Mariko’s harmonies float above, softer and more shimmery. The voices parallel each other throughout the song, but the different vocal textures place them in separate spheres.

The song’s images of yearning also echo the band’s process of making music at a distance: loving someone absent, yearning for togetherness, feeling illuminated from afar. I’m not talking about romantic love here, but the strange, nameless love shared through music.

  • “The albums opening single “Torn Vine” has a folksy rock vibe, the music illustrating a sense of excitement. The next couple of singles illustrate a story of conflicting emotions, building walls, and the effect of adoption has on your growth. Their music has a similar sound to a contemporary Simon and Garfunkel meets John Mayer while Adrian’s voice is very much like a John Mayer meets Kris Allen.

The songs are organic and pure musical power. Their hooks define the word and their melodies are beyond hypnotic.”

  • “Beautifully intimate or intimidatingly beautiful. You take your pic. It’s in there somewhere. But what we can all agree on is that The A.M.s quietly take the reigns and give you a portrait of originality with ‘Smoke’.

Poignant with the subtle instrumentation that builds with a slow crescendo, ‘Smoke frames the soulful and unique vocal duo with something memorable that takes you on a journey in your mind with reflection and grace.”

  • “With this gentle and surreal blend of melodies and lyrics, they give life to a tale so haunting and personal that it feels like an honor to be able to listen to it.”
